Instructional Philosophy

Program Goals

1)      To develop a safety conscience worker.

2)      To provide a realistic understanding of the work environment.

3)      To provide knowledge and skills necessary for entry level employment or post secondary education.

 

Course Description

Introduction to Carpentry is designed to provide students with basic knowledge and skills of the carpentry trade.  Emphasis will be placed on safety, tools of the trade, blueprint reading, measuring, estimating, and the use of computers.

 

Prerequisites:  None

 

Course Goals

Upon successful completion of this course employees should have:

1)      A basic understanding of safe practices and procedures for the carpentry trade.

2)      A basic understanding of how to use the tools of the carpentry trade.

3)      A basic understanding of carpentry tasks and the materials used to perform those tasks.

 

 

 

This course aims to provide an understanding of timber joints and the tools used in carpentry.

Course Content:

  • Carpentering
  • Working out a cutting list
  • Selecting softwood and hardwood
  • Measuring and marking timber
  • Scribing to fit
  • Use of power tools
  • Dovetail and mortice and tenon joints
  • Hanging a door
  • Fitting hinges
  • Fitting a mortice lock
  • Caring for tools
  • Final project
